charlie & the itch...
Hi,
My dog Charlie, a former student, continually scratches the same spot, the back of his elbow (do dogs have elbows???). I have checked that site many times and find nothing, but it is also hard to tell b/c he is 100% black.
Any suggestions?

questions from readers: stankbreath
Dog question: killer breath. How do I get rid of it? Not me, the dog. I tried doggy toothpaste, but its a hassle like I'm sure you know. I can barely remember to brush my own twice a day. The treats that are supposed to freshen breath don't work. I mean its rank.
(from Lulu's Father)
Answer: Well, she's probably got a tooth problem which means you might want to get her a dental procedure which means you will have to knock her out and pay a chunk of $ for it. Don't feed her anything soft like jerky treats or wet dog food. Only crunchy biscuit-like stuff that she has to work at to disintegrate. Knuckle bones are good too for teeth and boredom. But they're gross and they smell sometimes. Greenies get the gas face.
There's not much you can do besides the dental thing that actually works. And don't feed her hot dogs and beer, no matter how much you really want to.

have your dog's entire medical history in your mini kate spade bag.
"How would you like to have your pet's complete medical history with you at allĀ times...in your pocket, purse or on your keychain.
"Now for the first time ever, it is possible not only to keep it with you at all times, but it can be updated each time you visit your Vet, get a new prescription, suffer an emergency."

if it really bothers you enough, get a set of these
They neutralize the odor of dog flatulence using a carbon filter strapped onto your dog's bum.

cleaning ears
A step-by-step protocol to clean the lovely ears of your dog.
The trick here is to make your dog think he's getting a great massage. So be tricky and sneaky. It's all about "acting as if". Disclaimer: if your dog is very nervous and has a tendency to bite, you can put a muzzle on, just in case.
Get some gauze, ear cleaning solution, and an able-bodied person or two.
Massage your dog's ear by the canal (right where the jaw meets the ear) until the dog's all into it, maybe leaning and groaning some. Don't use any of the supplies, just use your hand for this step.
Now use the gauze and massage your dog's ear with your one finger inside the gauze, make a tunnel with the gauze and stick your finger in the ear itself. Keep massaging, this is a trick to make your dog think this whole process is great.
When the dog is comfortable, put the tip of the bottle of the solution in where your finger just was. Massage with the bottle. Don't squeeze yet.
